The Djemaa el Fna is located in Marrakech Medina. The focal point of the city and a market place hat brings together both the Berber and Arab populations of Morocco.

There is certain question regarding the roots of it's name. Assembly of the dead in Arabic , but also, the word djemaa means mosque in Arabic, so, it could also mean place of the vanished mosque , in referring to a destroyed Almoravid mosque.

The main square of Marrakesh it is used equally by locals and tourists.

The daytime sees the square visited by orange juice stalls, water sellers in colourful costumes with traditional leather water-bags and brass cups, and snake charmers. In the afternoon, it is common to see Acrobat boys demonstrating their abilities, either in groups or individually.

During the evening, the square becomes busier, story-tellers (in Berber or Arabic) and musicians from across the region.

At 5pm (17:00hrs) everyday, the square turns into a massive open air restaurant with lots of choices of food stalls offering wide ranges of freshly cooked cuisine prepared from fresh, local produce.

The square is also the start of the Marrakech souks , the small shops which offer the local people the wide range of goods which they need to survive. The Souks are not just there for the tourists, they really are a source of trade for locals too. Surrounding the square are cafe terraces to sit in and relax and watch the world go buy whilst sipping Mint tea, coffee and enjoying local cuisine such as Tagine.

Whilst all this activity in the square proceeds every day to create an atomsphere of mammoth proportions, the hotels and gardens around the area are home to tourists who come from all over the country and all over the world to experience this unique and wonderful city.

The square itself used to be a bus station, until, in the early 2000's the buses were replaced to make this area an almost complete pedestianised zone.
